Malignant Mesothelioma Information
Malignant mesothelioma is one of the fast rising cancers in the present times. Thousands of cases are reported every year from all over the world. Many more are still at risk of getting afflicted with this cancer. The very nature of the disease is such that a person might be carrying the seeds of this cancer for nearly 30-40 years without having any knowledge about it. It is high time that the society and its leaders stand up and take notice.
Malignant mesothelioma is the cancer of the mesothelium which forms a protective covering around majority of the internal organs of the human body. This membrane has different nomenclatures depending upon the organ that it is protecting. In malignant mesothelioma it is this membrane that gets afflicted with the cancer.
The main cause of malignant mesothelioma is the overexposure of the individual to the mineral known as asbestos. The asbestos fibers or dust enter the human body through inhalation or direct ingestion. The size of the asbestos fiber is so small that it remains undetected for a very long period of time. After such a long latency period, it starts interfering with the normal functioning of the mesothelial cells. As a result of this interference the mesothelial cells start growing in a much unregulated manner. This results in the development of the cancerous tissues in the afflicted region.
Apart from the long latency period, another factor that makes mesothelioma a dangerous cancer is the non-specific nature of the symptoms of this disease. Almost all of its symptoms are very much similar to those of other more commonly occurring and recognizable diseases. As a result the detection of this disease becomes very difficult just on the basis of the symptoms. By the time the disease is detected it has already entered into the final stages, when the best that the doctor can do is to make the remaining life of the individual more comfortable and less painful.
