Malignant Mesothelioma Symptoms
Malignant mesothelioma is one disease that has befuddled the medical scientists as well as the common man for a long time now. Mesothelioma is the cancer of the mesothelium which forms a protective covering around the internal organs of the human body. The main cause for malignant mesothelioma is the exposure to the mineral known as asbestos.
The major cause for worry regarding this cancer is that its symptoms are very much similar to the symptoms of other more commonly occurring diseases.
Pleural mesothelioma: Pleural mesothelioma is caused when the asbestos particles get lodged in the pleural region. A majority of the symptoms are due to the bloating of the membrane and the built up of fluid in the pleural region. Some of the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are coughing up blood, night sweats or fever, a persistent cough in the chest region and sometimes pain while breathing, shortness of breath and fatigue even while at rest. Majority of these symptoms can be very easily confused with the other more commonly occurring diseases.
Peritoneal mesothelioama: Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs when the asbestos particles omehow find their way inside the abdominal region. Some of the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioama are abdominal pain, digestive disturbances, and unexplained loss of weight, fever and fatigue. Again the majority of the symptoms are quite common with the other more common diseases.
Pericardial Mesothelioma: Pericardial mesothelioma occurs when the asbestos particles mange to find their way into the pericardial region. The manner in which the asbestos fibers find their way into the pericardial region has been tried to explain in different ways. One theory states that the asbestos particles are inhaled into the lungs and from there they move towards the heart region. Another theory states that the asbestos fibers are directly ingested into the heart region. Some of the symptoms of the pericardial mesothelioma are the heart palpitations, irregular heart beat, varying degrees of chest pain, and coughing.
What is a matter of concern is that these symptoms are very much familiar with the other diseases that are more common. As a result even if the patient visits the doctor because of these symptoms, he might not be correctly diagnosed as suffering from mesothelioma.
